Kite flying and depression

Pastimes like kite flying, particularly body drag surfing, can be extremely effective in restoring healthy mental and physical balance for the following reasons:

  • These activities are practiced in the open air, on sunny days with light winds and in beautiful natural surroundings by the sea or on lakes (light therapy and wind therapy)
  • The use of body drag kites can be a source of considerable gratification because it is relatively challenging and highly satisfying when practiced with ease and in total safety
  • The degree of physical effort required depends on the type of kite and the decision to use it as a game or a work-out (body drag, kite buggy, kite surfing)
  • Kite flying requires solving non-conventional problems (straightening out wires, disentangling knots, inspecting rigging)
  • Solving these problems demands discipline, commitment and attention, along with a level of skill and dexterity that is sustainable even by depressed individuals
  • Kite flying is a powerful distraction from feelings of self-affliction, isolation and rumination.
